The ramparts that were built by the Portuguese in the 15th century contrast with the whiteness of the houses. Three imposing gates penetrate the ramparts. The word magical is fairly overused today, but if there’s a place that truly epitomizes the mystical adjective it’s Chefchaouen! The Berber city was founded in 1471 it was founded as a holy city by the warrior Abū Youma and later moved by Sīdī ʿAlī ibn Rashīd to its present site at the base of Mount El-Chaouene, it became a refuge for Moors expelled from Spain. A site long closed to non-Muslims. With the construction of its walled Kasbah and fortress (defense against the Portuguese). Many Jews settled in medieval times, and it was occupied in 1920 by the Spanish, who restored it to the Moroccan kingdom in 1956 giving it a Spanish inflection that remains, although it’s back under the purview of Morocco now. The charming arched Moroccan architecture also helps make it completely one of a kind! Chefchaouen has an extensive and remarkable religious heritage with dozens of mosques, oratories, zaouias, and mausoleums.
